How To Choose A Multiple Vitamin: Important considerations in disease prevention, anti-aging, energy and well being

The scientific evidence is quite clear that optimal levels of vitamins and minerals are an essential part of health maintenance and defense against many diseases. The problem is that most multiple vitamin and mineral supplements do not contain the dosages required to maximize your defense against many common degenerative diseases, provide proper support of immune system function, and bone density, optimize energy production, and synthesis of brain chemicals required for attention, learning and memory. The next time you go to purchase a multiple vitamin supplement make sure it contains the following dosages:

1.

Antioxidant Enriched – antioxidants quench free radicals in the body that cause genetic mutations, and contribute to macular degeneration, cataracts, inflammation and cardiovascular disease. Certain antioxidants also inhibit the formation of carcinogens such as nitrosamines and boost the body’s detoxification systems to help prevent the build up of cancer-causing agents in our tissues. Antioxidants also preserve brain function as we age by preventing free radicals from damaging our brain cells, but you need the right dosages to achieve these effects. As such, your multiple vitamin and mineral supplement should provide these daily antioxidant dosages:

        a. Vitamin C - 1000 mg

        b. Vitamin E (natural) Succinate – 400 IU

        c. Selenium – 100 mcg

        d. Beta-carotene – 10,000 IU

        e. Vitamin A – 2500 IU

        f. Bioflavonoids – 50 mg

        g. Lutein powder – 6 mg

        h. Lycopene powder – 6 mg
* Any antioxidant dosages less than this simply do not give you the protection you need.

2.

B–50 Complex –a multiple vitamin should also contain 50 mg each of Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and 50 mcg vitamin B12, 400 mcg folic acid and 300 mcg biotin. B-vitamins are vital for energy and red blood cell production. They guard against genetic mistakes that can easily occur during cell replication, keep blood homocysteine in a safe range (reducing heart disease risk) and facilitate the brain’s production of chemicals required for learning, cognitive function, alertness and prevention of age-related depression.

3.

500 mg of Calcium – studies show that most adults are missing 500 mg of calcium each day from their diet to get the minimum amount of calcium required for basic bone support (1200 mg of calcium per day). A well designed multiple vitamin and mineral provides 500 mg of elemental calcium along with other key bone-building nutrients:

        i. Vitamin D – 1000 IU

        ii. Zinc – 15 mg

        iii. Copper – 2 mg

        iv. Magnesium – 200 mg

4.

Everything You Need From Vitamins A to-Zinc – a high potency multi should contain optimal levels of antioxidants, a B-50 complex, 500 mg of calcium, 1000 IU of vitamin D (as well as other bone support nutrients), and every other vitamin and mineral, at optimal disease prevention dosages.

My advice is to take a high potency multi vitamin as the foundation supplement in your overall supplementation regime.
