​It’s not about fewer wrinkles

Although it seems hard to believe that your own body would conspire to cause you to wear out and set you up for a life threatening disease, the fact is that it does. Why? The simple answer - as far as nature is concerned, once you have lived long enough to reproduce the species, and have raised your children where they can look after themselves, like other species, you’ve served your biological purpose on the planet.

​Achieving optimal health

​Achieving and maintaining optimal health requires a diet low in animal fat, high in protective nutrients and dietary fibre from fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains; remaining at, or near our ideal body weight; maintaining a good cardiovascular fitness; and avoiding or limiting exposure to known carcinogens.
Many anti-aging experts, including myself, also recommend taking a daily high potency multivitamin and mineral supplement that’s antioxidant-enriched, contains a B-50 complex and at least 400-500 mg of elemental calcium; an essential fatty acid supplement; and two tablespoons of flaxseed powder, during all of adult life to help optimize health, reduce risk o disease and slow aging.

​Breaking it down

Evidence continues to support the view that antioxidants help to reduce the risk of many degenerative diseases and slows the aging process. Evidence also shows that B-50 is important for brain function; reduces the risk of heart disease and supports other positive health outcomes.  Calcium helps to reduce risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure and is linked to a reduced risk of colon and rectal cancers.  

The use of an essential fatty acid supplement (EFA), to optimize synthesis of the prostaglandin hormones may suppress inflammation; reduce cancer and heart disease risk (1200 mg capsule, containing 400 mg each of borage seed oil, flaxseed oil and fish oil).

The daily ingestion of two tablespoons of ground flaxseed contains a unique substance, which gives rise to the estrogen-like compounds enterolactone and enterodiol. Once absorbed into the bloodstream, these compounds affect various tissues to help protect reproductive organs; reduce the risk of gallbladder disease; lowers blood cholesterol; and improves large bowel function.

​Anti-aging, disease preventive supplements

1. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance found in every cell of your body. It’s an essential nutrient that enables your cells to convert the food you eat into ATP-energy, which is the form of energy used by all the body cells to power their biological machinery. If your cells are deficient in CoQ10 there’s a decline in cell function that accelerates aging, heart disease, a decline in brain function, a weakening of the immune system and heightened cancer risk. More recently we have seen this deficiency as a key underlying cause of Parkinson’s disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and other common age-related problems.

Our bodies make optimal amounts of CoQ10 up to age 20, with a significant decline by 35-40. Although some foods contain CoQ10, it’s not sufficient for the body’s needs. Studies suggest that 30 mg of a CoQ10 supplement daily is required after 35 for general anti-aging/disease prevention purposes.

Well-designed studies from Japan, other Asian countries, as well as Germany and other parts of Europe, have shown supplementation with hawthorn reverses congestive heart failure, lowers blood pressure and improves cases of angina, also by enhancing ATP-energy production. On a cellular level, 30 mg of CoQ10 and 37.5 mg of hawthorn work synergistically to help optimize ATP-energy in our bodies after age 35 to help prevent aging associated with a host of degenerative conditions. 

2. A strong immune system is key in preventing cancer and reducing susceptibility to infection by viruses, bacteria and other micro-organisms according to numerous studies. As we age our immune and detoxification systems become weaker and more sluggish. The ability to neutralize toxins and other contaminants through detoxification is vital to long term survival and optimal health.

To maintain and rejuvenate the immune and detoxification systems a daily combination of a high potency multi-vitamin and mineral supplement along with a supplement combining 100mg astragalus, 30mg reishi mushroom extract, 150mg milk thistle and 25 mg indole-3-carbinol taken twice a day will boost and support your body’s immune and detoxification systems. 

3. Glucosamine is a raw material your body needs to make joint cartilage. Around 35-40 the body loses its ability to manufacture optimal amounts of glucosamine. This decrease promotes cartilage erosion and the possible development of osteoarthritis. Since the early 1980’s, more than 300 scientific studies and over 20 double-blind clinical trials have shown that a glucosamine sulfate supplementation can improve osteoarthritic symptoms; halt cartilage destruction; and regenerate new cartilage. Now widely accepted as a treatment for arthritis, glucosamine sulfate is proven to be extremely safe and effective. 

After 35 you many wish to supplement your diet with 500-1,000mg of glucosamine sulfate, in a combination with 100mg of MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane) and the anti-inflammatory and cartilage support ingredients – Quercetin and Bromelain Enzymes daily to prevent cartilage degeneration and osteoarthritis. 

4. Approximately 6-8% of the population over 65 has Alzheimer’s disease. With the disease doubling every 5 years, 47% of people 85 and older have Alzheimer’s disease. Two factors contribute to age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. First, cumulative free radical damage in brain cells as a result of free radicals forming the amyloid protein promotes the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Recent studies show that individuals taking antioxidant supplements have a reduced incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and better cognitive performance.

The second factor is the age-related decrease of the memory chemical acetylcholine. The good news – taking two capsules of these natural supplements combined in a complex beginning between 50 and 60, helps support brain levels of acetylcholine: 50mg CDP-Choline and 50mg Phosphatidylserine also good for the nerve cell membranes; 150mg Acetyl-L-Carnitine increases the concentration of a vital nerve cell; and 50mg Bacopa Monnieri enhances nerve transmission and provides antioxidant protection to brain cells (I removed huperzine A Barbara because of some controversy over longterm safety of this nutrient)
